Solar Cooker:

Sixty pecent of the total energy consumed in the domestic sphere is used for cooking purposes. The main source of energy for cooking is wood. The average daily consumption of a household is 5 kg of wood. If alternative sources of energy such as shrubs, dung, etc. are taken into consideration (ca. 55%); the average wood consumption will be ca. 3 kg per day per household. This gives an average consumption for cooking and tea of ca. 5 kg per day per household. One kg of wood costs approximately Afs. 3. Hence, the cost of wood per household per day is calculated at Afs. 15. This gives a figure of Afs. 450 per month and Afs. 5400 per year. At Afs. 51 per US$, this is equivalent to US$ 156.

In order to tackle all the above issues, alternatives to wood as a source of energy in general and for cooking in particular will have to be found. These alternatives should be based on ecologically sound principles and economically sound footings.

The use of renewable sources of energy, e.g. solar, should be seriously taken into consideration and encouraged. The introduction of the parabola solar cooker among the communities has strongly contributed to meet energy demand.
